The Manchester Garden

RHS Chelsea Flower Show, 21–25 May 2019

Ambition

A resilient city reinvented for a new and dynamic era; a haven amidst the hubbub; a glimpse of the shifting materiality of our future lives; and a critical plan to adapt and thrive in a changed climate: these are the rich emergent and progressive themes that have informed the Manchester Garden as conceived by Exterior Architecture for Chelsea 2019.

The Garden

Our garden will surprise and immerse the visitor in a story of green space in cities, of sustainability and water, of awakening from a post-industrial torpor and of the more orchestrated urban verdancy of parkland and playground. And across these planted narrative areas spans a stunning commissioned sculpture that brings to mind cottonopolis, advanced materials and the wonder-material that is graphene.

Manchester’s garden has a space to gather together, in a paved area created with beautiful local sandstone, appropriately named after a founding city elder, Sir Joseph Whitworth. Our trees are planes, zelkova, honey locust and White Mulberry, all specified for tomorrow’s climate in partnership with our very own City of Trees initiative.

Our garden has been designed to be no waste, largely re-used, and to gift to the city a planting palette that can future-proof our built environment. Manchester today, almost two millennia after its foundation, is a city reinvented and one that can truly blow away your assumptions and pre-conceptions. We were the epicentre of at least one if not more industrial revolutions. We have always taught the world a thing or two. We are here to make a difference.

Enjoy our garden. We hope it inspires and starts a conversation.

Sponsorship & Corporate Hospitality Opportunities

As a city with an ever-stronger brand reputation across the world, Manchester has spent the last decade and a half working tirelessly to create a new narrative about the city region, a long-term project which is now coming to fruition in terms of city attractiveness and success.

Never one to rest on its laurels, the city is now set to launch a project to again reach a fresh, and influential set of new audiences:  Manchester is going to commission a garden at Chelsea Flower Show in 2019. As the world’s most prestigious flower show, Chelsea is a beacon for media coverage and spectator interest.

With over 160,000 visitors each year, the Show results in more than a dozen hours of media coverage on the BBC with an average audience reach of two million people for each broadcast. Around 1000 journalists also attend the Show
